I received my first taste of Scarlet Speedster at Northgate Tavern about four or five months ago. I stumbled into the bar at the close of an evening of bar-hopping and was instantly grabbed by the smooth sound coming from the back patio. “The name Scarlet Speedster came from a comic book character called ‘The Flash’ ... Scarlet Speedster is his nickname,” said Jeremiah Lipking (bass, vocals). The other members of Scarlet Speedster include Dusty Goff (guitar, vocals) and Bobby Hansford (percussion, vocals). As far as their sound is concerned, they mix an 80s throwback sound with a modern temperament that would make any fan of The Cure cry out with joy. “Scarlet Speedster was formed in 2004 by combining Bobby and Dusty’s electronic elements with my taste in punk and goth influences, so we could create a sound that is rarely heard in this area.” Lipking said. And it truly is a unique sound – one that is amazingly polished and easy to enjoy no matter what taste your musical taste might be. Lipking said that the band identifies itself as a “new wave rock band.” Their primary influences include Depeche Mode, The Cure, Joy Division, Morrissey, Type O Negative, Prayer Chain, Bauhaus, The Church and VNV Nation. “I have always gotten my draw and inspiration from unique bands from the past, something besides just dirty guitar rock and roll,” Hansford said.
